A tab for an easy-open end is manufactured and riveted onto the shell end panel by high-speed conversion presses that require consistent metal properties to run efficiently. Subsequently, the tab is seen by consumers as a smart tool to open the can, a tool that is strong enough to maintain its integrity during the opening action: no bending, no tearing and no rivet loosening. So far steel tab can be produced from a metal gauges as thin as 0.26mm:

 

Bending rigidity is achieved. This comes from the shape and the metal yield stress. The most resistant shapes are usually made with sharp radii, which are quite demanding for tab forming if metal elongation is too low. Elongation of about 5% or more allows complex forming without detrimental thinning.

 

The tab horseshoe area withstands severe strain in the shear mode during opening.

 

The tabstock yield stress is sufficiently high to ensure rivet stability.

 

Products with medium yield stress (TH435/460) or high yield stress (TH520/550/620) are the best options for standard tab geometries.

 

A high-performance tab also requires adequate surface coating:

Metallic coating: zinc, tin or chromium. Zinc is the preferred option to eliminate the rust risk, especially for demanding filling or retorting.

 

Organic coating: clear, gold, mostly alu-pigmented.

Ⅰ. Production process and characteristics

1.    Surface Treatment:

1st: the use of Al-Zn composite coating, the atmospheric corrosion resistant is 2- 6 times than the same coating thickness of hot dip galvanized sheet, so there is no visible rust during the process of sterilization of cooking in high temperature;

2nd: Zinc-coated substrate, after adding the pickling process to make the coating adhesion and anti-down to achieve the best bending strength;

3rd: after coating with the special lacquer, this results in a level I adhesion. The lacquer will not peel off during the punching.

2.    The products have two colors, silver and gold, it looks nice with the outside color

of the EOE. It won’t change the color after high temperature sterilization.

 

Ⅱ. Product types and main technical indicators

1. The thickness of the material: 0.26mm, 0.28mm, 0.30mm, 0.32mm, 0.37mm, 0.38mm, 0.40mm, 0.42mm, etc. Based on a certain quantity, we can customize according to the thickness requirements of the customer.

2. Mechanical property:

Low hardness (HR30Tm): 64~68, tensile strength (MPa): 435~480;

Mid hardness (HR30Tm): 68~72, tensile strength (MPa): 480~550;

High hardness (HR30Tm): 72~76, tensile strength (MPa): 550~620.

3. Zinc coating: We use Al-Zn composite coating, and the weight is about 25-60g/㎡(sum of both sides).

4. Lacquering: We can lacquer it both side aluminum lacquer, the thickness is 5~7g/㎡; also we can lacquer one side aluminum lacquer, another side gold lacquer.

5. The width: We can cut it into any size according to customer’s order, the tolerance is ± 0.05mm.

 

Ⅲ. Packaging: Our material was wrapped with plastic film, then covered by water-proof paper, desiccant and iron sheet on the pallet. The weight of each pallet is about 1.2~2.8 tons. The internal diameter of the coil is 508mm, the external diameter of the coil is 800~1300mm.

1st: the use of Al-Zn composite coating, the atmospheric corrosion resistant is 2- 6 times than the same coating thickness of hot dip galvanized sheet, so there is no visible rust during the process of sterilization of cooking in high temperature;

2nd: Zinc-coated substrate, after adding the pickling process to make the coating adhesion and anti-down to achieve the best bending strength;

3rd: after coating with the special lacquer, this results in a level I adhesion. The lacquer will not peel off during the punching.

2.    The products have two colors, silver and gold, it looks nice with the outside color

of the EOE. It won’t change the color after high temperature sterilization.
